Birdscarer When the Butterfly Fades

What you gonna do when the butterfly fades?
Published on Mar 4, 2015

Birdscarer is a Buckinghamshire, UK, based alternative rock recording project between lyricist Mike Hallett and composer Kevin Jakeman. Formed in 2010, Birdscarer released its first CD ‘Ways to Play the Game’ two years later.

Birdscarer have now released their first video, ‘When the Butterfly Fades’. The song is inspired by the butterfly technique, a method used for managing self-harm. The video features Maria Bonita Witchell in her acting debut.

About The Video: 'When the Butterfly Fades' is about the butterfly technique, a method for managing self-injury where a butterfly is drawn on the wrist of the self-injuring person. That butterfly is then considered to be alive; to cut the wrist means killing the butterfly. This causes a moment of self-reflection that can be enough to ward off the impulse to self-injure. The problem comes when the butterfly fades, and one is confronted with the choice of self-injuring -- or drawing a new butterfly. Maria Bonita Witchell makes her acting debut in this video.

Song Lyrics :

Take a breath
Take a deep breath

Feel it fill your lungs
Your life is worth
As much as anyone’s

Open the curtains on a brand new day
Every one’s a flight through a scary maze
What’cha gonna do when the butterfly fades?

So much store in a drawing on your skin
Tells you when to stop and when to begin
What’cha gonna do when the butterfly fades?
What’cha gonna do when the butterfly fades?

Take a breath
This is what it comes to, your young life
Reflected in the gleaming blade of a knife

Take a deep breath
Feel it fill your lungs
Your life is worth
As much as anyone’s
(×2)

Take a deep breath
